A local anaesthetic of the amide type is lidocaine. By blocking nerves, it is utilised to provide local anaesthetic at various body regions. Reducing the ionic fluxes necessary for the start and conduction of impulses stabilises the neuronal membrane and exerts local anaesthetic activity.

A member of the amide group of anaesthetics, lidocaine is used to produce local or regional anaesthesia through infiltration techniques like percutaneous injection, intravenous regional anaesthesia through peripheral nerve blocks like the brachial plexus and intercostal, and through central neural techniques like lumbar and caudal epidural blocks.
