Fexofenadine Hydrochloride
The main active metabolite of terfenadine, fexofenadine hydrochloride, is an antihistamine with specific H1-receptor antagonist action. Fexofenadine hydrochloride showed roughly equal antihistaminic effects in both enantiomers. In rats and sensitised guinea pigs, fexofenadine hydrochloride prevented histamine release from peritoneal mast cells in response to antigen-induced bronchospasm. These data’s clinical relevance is uncertain. No anticholinergic or alpha1-adrenergic blocking effects were seen in laboratory animals. Additionally, no sedative or other effects on the central nervous system were noticed. The blood-brain barrier is a barrier that fexofenadine does not overcome, according to investigations on radiolabeled tissue distribution in rats.
