Vitamin D3 comes in the form of calcitriol. Your body can more easily absorb calcium thanks to vitamin D.

When a person has chronic kidney failure and is not on dialysis, hyperparathyroidism (excessively active parathyroid glands) and metabolic bone disease are treated with calcitriol.

In patients with hypoparathyroidism (underactive parathyroid glands) brought on by surgery, illness, or other diseases, calcitriol is also used to treat calcium insufficiency.

In dialysis patients, calcitriol is also used to treat metabolic bone disease and calcium insufficiency (hypocalcemia).
