Rafoxanide
An antiparasitic active element called rafoxanide is used in veterinary medicine to treat internal parasites that affect animals, such as liver flukes and several kinds of roundworms. Pests in homes and agriculture are not combated by it. It belongs to the salicylanilides chemical class.
Rafoxanide is one salicylanilide that has a partially understood chemical mechanism of action. They are all uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation, which disrupts the process by which ATP, the cellular “fuel,” is produced in the mitochondria of the cell. This appears to happen via inhibiting the activity of the enzymes involved in this process, succinate dehydrogenase and fumarate reductase. The parasite’s motility is affected, along with possibly other processes.
