Niclosamide API
An antihelminth called niclosamide is used to treat tapeworm infestations. It might function by releasing the electron transport chain from the ATP synthase. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a vital chemical that provides energy for metabolism, cannot be produced when this important metabolic process is disrupted.
Niclosamide kills tapeworms immediately upon contact. Adult worms (but not ova) are quickly destroyed, probably as a result of oxidative phosphorylation being uncoupled or ATPase activity is stimulated. The deceased worms are then eliminated through the feces or occasionally in the intestine. By attaching to and destroying DNA, niclosamide may function as a molluscicide.
